BIRD WALK AT STRATFORD HALL SATURDAY, JUNE 21 On Saturday, June 21, Frank Schaff of the Northern Neck Audubon Society will lead a bird walk at Stratford Hall Plantation at 9:00 a.m. Stratford Hall is the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and home to four generations of the Lee family, including the only brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence, Richard Henry Lee and Francis Lightfoot Lee. Stratford Hall has a magnificent setting atop a high bluff above the Potomac River. Encompassing a total of 1,700 of its original acres, the plantation is still managed as a farm today. The varied landscape and more than three miles of scenic nature trails lined with wildflowers provide countless viewing opportunities for birding and wildlife enthusiasts. Among possible bird sightings are great blue and green-backed herons, turkey vultures, osprey, bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, spotted sandpipers, mourning doves, and northern mockingbirds. Directions are as follows: From Kilmarnock, take Route 3 west approximately 48 miles. Turn right onto Route 214 (Stratford Hall Road). Go 1.2 miles and turn left onto Great House Road. Take the first right to stay on Great House Road and proceed to the Visitor’s Center. From Warsaw, take Route 3 West 16.4 miles. Turn right onto Route 214 (Stratford Hall Road). Go 1.2 miles and turn left onto Great House Road. Take the first right to stay on Great House Road and proceed to the Visitor’s Center. The address for Stratford Hall for your GPS or Google Maps is 483 Great House Road, Montross, VA. There is a $5.00 entrance fee to Stratford Hall. Participants should meet at the visitor’s center at 9:00 a.m. There will be several pairs of loaner binoculars available.
