Today was a special day on the Belle Isle Bluebird Trail !!! We now have our 1st Belle Isle baby bluebird of the year - born on 4/20/2011 at 10;37 am. I was fortunate enough to see this first of the year little one break out of the egg. When I opened the box to monitor it I saw one egg that was partially open. There was no apparent movement so I thought that the chick was dead. I placed my pencil lightly on side of the egg and it opened wide revealing a tiny new born baby bluebird alive and kicking. I would have taken a photo but it was very windy so I closed the box quickly and got out of the area so mother could return to keep her remaining eggs and new born warm. ( She was setting in a near by tree waiting to return) Out of a total of 21 bluebird boxes on the Belle Isle Trail 10 have active bluebird nests with 19 + eggs ( one female bluebird stayed on her eggs so I could not count.) 2 of our bb boxes have active Chickadee nests. In addition to the 21 bluebird boxes we have installed 5 Brown-headed Nuthatch boxes along our trail. So far we have 2 active Chickadee nests in our Nuthatch boxes. We see Brown-headed Nuthatches at Belle Isle but so far none have chosen our boxes. The Belle Isle Bluebird Trail is monitored by VA Master Naturalist and NNAS volunteers under the direction of Paula Boundy. Paula organized and set up this wonderful project and we owe her our thanks for her work and her great idea !!!!!! Paul & Jessica Servis, NNAS
