MONDAY, OCTOBER 14 BIRD WALK NEAR TAPPAHANNOCK
On Monday, October 14, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird
walk at the Hutchinson Tract of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife
Refuge. This 700+ acre tract, fronting on Mount Landing Creek and Route 17,
has restored grasslands, tidal marshes, and deep mature hardwood forests.
Among possible sightings are pine and yellow-rumped warblers, brown creepers,
dark-eyed juncos, Eastern phoebes, catbirds, swamp and white-throated sparrows,
belted kingfishers, and bald eagles.
The bird walk will begin at 9:00 a.m. The Hutchinson tract, 19180 Tidewater
Trail, is located approximately one and one-half miles north of Tappahannock on
Route 17. Heading north on Route 17 from Tappahannock, you will pass a large
brick church on the left. Go to the next cross over and head back south on
Route 17. Turn right into the first driveway by the refuge sign.
(If you cross Mount Landing Creek going north, you have gone too far.)
