Dear Katherine,Thank
you for your input. I am quite certain that the keynote
speaker for our November 3rd conference will address this
definition. Meanwhile I will put the discussion on the
agenda for our Oct. 14th meeting. We will also have a
psychodrama at that meeting. Consider joining us!Warmly,Joyce
E. Williams

NJAMC brochure
Good
afternoon,
My
name is Kate Shirley and I am a faculty member in the
counseling program at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
I have been receiving emails from this listserv since I
learned about the organization at NJCA in 2016. I regret
that I have not been active
in this group previously - as some life circumstances have
kept me rather busy and less involved in such organizations.
However, I'm hoping that it's okay with everyone
if I ask a question, or rather, make a suggestion.
I had never seen the brochure for NJAMC before today,
and was somewhat surprised at the organization's
definition of multiculturalism. I felt particularly
uncomfortable by the following opening quote: "The
fixed, less changeable characteristics we are born
into or with, such as ethnicity, race, gender, sexual
orientation, disability, and social class."
The way I view many of these multicultural
orientations is quite fluid, developmental, and not assigned
by others. Except for race and elements of ethnicity, all
of the above are reference groups that I feel are indeed
"changeable." I would venture to
guess that I am not the only individual who feels that the
definition has the potential for being exclusionary, for
example, with those who identify as gender fluid, for
someone whose sexuality is developing, or for someone whose
ability status has changed
over time.
I am sending this email not to complain, but simply to
ask if the membership is open to revisiting the phrasing of
this definition to be more inclusive of diverse life paths.
I would love to be involved in a related discussion. I
appreciate your thoughtful
consideration and again apologize for having previously
been silent in this group. Please let me know your
thoughts.
Sincerely,
Kate

Dear NJAMC Friends,
At Saturday's meeting, I was asked to send our
brochure to the listserv so that we all have a copy of our
mission statement.
Cheers,
Jennie
