When Pentax announced and advertised the virtues of multicoating, Nikon issued 
a 
statement saying they had been doing it for years, as it was necessary for some 
complex lens formulations.

Actually, multicoating was invented in 1938 at GE, but not widely used until 
the 
70s. But was it Pentax? Or Zeiss? Or both?
