Overall, I'd say the meeting went pretty well. However, there were a
few things I wanted to discuss with you all...
One, we didn't hit all of the points on the agenda. Two of the details
we missed: club priorities and focus, and review and approval of the
minutes (from the first and second meetings). Catching up on the
approval of the minutes should be simple enough, but I'm concerned that
there wasn't a lot of discussion about the club priorities. Amy
highlighted the important fact that our ultimate goal is to get
Democrats elected, but as far as I can tell, there isn't a strong sense
of what our club is going to do to accomplish that goal. I feel that we
should seek discussion and input from the general club membership at the
next meeting.
Second, I'd like us to seek further clarification about how amendments
to the by-laws work. The way I read Article XII, the club can amend the
by-laws by a majority vote. There is a clause about approval by the DEC
and Florida Democratic Party, but that doesn't state that we can't make
changes. I think that we were too hasty to shut down discussion about
the wording of the by-laws that several of the members expressed, and I
feel that it might be worth re-visiting at the next meeting.
Third, the meeting felt like it wandered off-topic at points, especially
in the latter half of the meeting... does anyone have suggestions for
how we can make sure that 1) everything we need to discuss gets put on
the agenda before the meeting, and 2) we cover everything on the agenda?
We can discuss these at the board meeting if you prefer, but I wanted to
voice these concerns early enough that they could be considered.
