CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Harvard University students have twice confronted law
professor Alan Dershowitz outside class, taking exception to his
proposal that Israel put Palestinian villages on notice that they will
be destroyed in the event of an Arab terrorist attack.

About two dozen students gathered last Thursday and again on Tuesday to
challenge Dershowitz over a column published in the Jerusalem Post last
week.

They carried signs, some of which had pictures of demolished homes, and
passed out copies of Dershowitz's column, with a list of
counterarguments on the back.

"He wants to threaten innocent civilian homes to get them to affect
third parties that they don't have any control over," said Najeeb
Khoury, 24, president of the law school group Justice For Palestine.
"Making the occupation more draconian has never decreased the level of
violence."

In the newspaper column, Dershowitz, who is Jewish, proposed that Israel
circulate a list of specific locations that would be demolished if
Palestinians carried out attacks.

"It will announce with precision exactly what it will do in response to
the next act of terrorism - for example, the destruction of a small
village which has been used as a base for terrorist operations," he
wrote.

Dershowitz said he is willing to debate the matter. Justice for
Palestine said it has not decided whether to do so.

"The terrorist has to know that when he gets on the bus and blows up
Israeli citizens, he's also blowing up buildings in his village. If any
one can think of a better way to do this, I'm open," Dershowitz said in
an interview.
