An Egyptian court trying a group of alleged militants ordered on Sunday that three books belonging to a British defendant be screened to see if they prohibited Islamic law, court officials said. The contents and titles of the books belonging to Reza Pankhurst, one of three Britons among 26 people accused of being Islamic militants, were not revealed, the officials said on condition of anonymity. Pankhurst and fellow Britons Ian Malcolm Nisbett and Maajid Nawaz are among a group of men charged with belonging to an organization, "Hizb-ut-Tahrir" or Party of Liberation, and trying to overthrow the government of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to establish Islamic rule. During an October court hearing, Egyptian defendant Alaa el-Zanatai told The Associated Press that Hizb-ut-Tahrir's books and publications "are quite known and could be identified easily, but documents have been added to show we were pro-violence." A committee of scholars at the Faculty of Islamic Jurisprudence at Cairo's Al Azhar University, the premier scholarly institution in the Sunni Muslim world, is expected to review the books and report back to the court Monday. The three Britons have said while in custody they were beaten and given electric shocks. But doctors reports presented in October indicated no sign of mistreatment. The British defendants told the AP that they were associated with the Islamic Liberation Party in the United Kingdom, although they insisted that they were not involved in any political activities in Egypt. The party was formed in Jordan in 1953 by Taqi Eddin al-Nabahani, a Palestinian who died in the Palestinian territories in 1978. The group has long been underground and its current leader is Palestinian Abdul-Kaddim Zalloum, whose whereabouts are unknown. Egypt banned the group in 1974, accusing it of a coup attempt.
