The United States has added Bangladesh and four other predominantly
Muslim nations to a list of countries whose nationals must register with
US authorities under new rules adopted by its immigration and
naturalisation service (INS).

The new restrictions follow the strict immigration regime put in place
to track potential terrorists, after the September 11, 2001 attacks on
US.

Males aged 16 and above have to register, declaring their whereabouts,
between February 24 and March 28, the INS said.

Other countries added to the original list of 25-- which included
Pakistan-- are Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait.

There is widespread speculation that Pakistan Foreign minister Khurshid
Mohamad Kasuri will take up the issue with US Secretary of State Colin
Powell, during his upcoming visit to US.

INS also extended until next month lapsed December and January deadlines
to register for foreigners from 20 mainly Middle Eastern countries and
North Korea, who were already covered by the rules.

Bangladesh has already complained about the inclusion of its citizens,
calling it "unfortunate", and protest demonstrations were held today in
Dhaka by a left-wing group, consisting some 100 activists.

Scores of riot police ringed the protestors as they marched through the
streets.

The protestors said they were fiercely opposed to the latest US move to
list Bangladesh among so-called terrorist states.
