TheInternational Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is a neutral, impartial
andindependent humanitarian organization whose mission is to protect the lives
anddignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence, and
toprovide them with assistance. The ICRC also endeavors to prevent suffering
bypromoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal
humanitarianprinciples. Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the originof the
Geneva Conventions and the International Red Cross and Red CrescentMovement. It
directs and coordinates the international activities by the Movementin armed
conflicts and other situations of violence.
INTERNSHIPPROGRAMME
INTERNATIONALHUMANITARIAN LAW (IHL) UNIT
(3 months with possibleextension)
Purposes
TheICRC Regional Delegation to Indonesia and Timor-Leste is calling
forapplications for the position of Intern atits IHL Unit based in Jakarta.
This Call for Application is for externalcandidates only. The successful
candidate will be offered an internshipcontract for a minimum of three (3)
months—with a possibility of extension upto six (6) months.
Underthe guidance and direct supervision of the Legal Adviser, the incumbent
willprovide assistance to the IHL Unit at the ICRC Regional Delegation to
Indonesiaand Timor-Leste in Jakarta. S/he will also be working in close
coordinationwith other relevant units at the delegation when needed.
Mainresponsibilities
1. Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Legal Adviser,
providesassistance in conducting research and analysis on international
humanitarianlaw (IHL) and/or other relevant legal regimes, including national
legalframework.
2. Provides assistance to the IHL Unit in dissemination and promotion ofIHL
to the authorities, academic circles, and the general public.
3. Supports the IHL Unit in compiling and updating database of
relevantdomestic legislation that contains IHL principles as part of the
Customary IHLGlobal Database.
4. Provides contribution to the delegation’s communication platform
onupdates regarding IHL issues when necessary.
5. Provides technical and administrative supports to the IHL Unit.
6. Able and willing to go on missions outside of Jakarta when necessary.
7. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Requirements
- At thetime of the application, applicants are a final year university
student(undergraduate/S1 or graduate/S2 programme) orhave recently graduated in
an S1 degree programme of the following studies:international humanitarian law,
public international law, internationalcriminal law, legal studies, human
rights, international relations,war/security studies, or other relevant studies.
- Thosewho are in the final year of an S1 degree programme of the above
studies areencouraged to apply. Applicants who have graduated from any degree
programmementioned above must only have a maximum 1 year of professional
experience(previous internship experiences are not considered as
professionalexperience).
- Previousexperience in the fields of international humanitarian law,
publicinternational law, or human rights law are an advantage but not essential.
- Researchexperience on international humanitarian law, international
criminal law,refugee law, or human rights law is desired.
- Previousexperience with the Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement is an asset.
Skill inadministrative works.
- Abilityto write clear and concise reports in English. Excellent level of
computerliteracy, including internet-based research.
- Proficiencyin Microsoft Offices, particularly on Outlook, Word, Excel,
and PowerPoint arerequired.
- Theworking language at the ICRC Jakarta Delegation is English.
Proficient inEnglish and Bahasa Indonesia both in oral and written is required.
Knowledge onFrench is an asset.
- Onlycitizens of Indonesia who can apply for this position.
Remuneration
TheICRC Regional Delegation in Jakarta will offer a modest remuneration to the
successfulcandidate throughout the internship duration to cover the relevant
expenses.

- A legal essay on contemporary issues on international humanitarian
law(600-800 words, footnotes excluded—if any). Possible topics are: cyber
warfare,lethal autonomous weapons, urban warfare, IHL and migration, nuclear
weapons,or strengthening respect of IHL. Applicants may, however, choose other
relevanttopics.
- A cover letter explaining: the reasons of applying for the position
andclearly indicate the starting date.
- A reference letter from the Faculty’s management, i.e. Dean or
Vice-Deanor Department Director (only forapplicants still enrolled in a degree
programme).
- A reference letter from an academic/professional supervisor and a
recentacademic transcript (for all applicants).
- Detailed CV/resumé, including a list of 2-3 referees with their
contactdetails (former or current academic/professional supervisors or others
who canattest the applicant’s qualifications. Referees who are relatives or
friendswill not be considered).
