Research internship: developing a sustainable business model for ETC
January â April 2020
Context
Erasmus Training Centre (ETC) is a Dutch language institute based in Jakarta
on the premises of the Dutch embassy. It has provided Dutch language and
culture courses in Indonesia since 1981. Due to cuts in Dutch subsidies the
ETC discontinued its services temporarily in July 2015. Nonetheless, the
Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia, four Dutch Higher
Education Insitutions (DHEI) and Nuffic Neso collaborated in an effort to
save ETC, considering that continuation of ETC is of significant importance
for Indonesia and for the DHEIs who are active in Indonesia. ETC was able to
continue activities from September 2015 onwards with support from its
operating partners (VU Amsterdam, Groningen University, Stenden University,
Leiden University) and facilitating partners (Embassy of the Kingdom of the
Netherlands in Indonesia and Nuffic Neso). As a result the ETC turned from a
fully subsidized institution increasingly into a market-oriented training
centre with growing positive results and added value for DHEIs. However, a
remaining challenge is that the ETC has not yet reached the point of running
operations self-sufficiently, which will be necessary in the longer run in
order to secure a sustainable future for the organisation. Hence, a viable
business model needs to be developed in close cooperation with the
participating DHEIs.
What will you be doing?
Based at the Nuffic Neso Indonesia office, housed in the Netherlands Embassy
in Jakarta, you will conduct consultations with ETCâs Director & staff,
ETCâs facilitating partners and other relevant stakeholders or resource
persons. Additionally, you will be reviewing relevant documentation (e.g. ETC
vision and ambitions document) and other data to get an understanding about
the current situation and future goals for Dutch language training and
academic preparations to study or conduct research in the Netherlands.
You will be reporting to Nuffic Neso Indonesia and the Netherlands Embassy in
Jakarta and receive guidance and instructions from these parties. The outcome
of your research will be a concept note with appreciation of the
sustainability of the current business model, an updated scenario based
business strategy and other recommendations on creating conditions which will
facilitate sustainable future of ETC.
To maximize the international learning experience, we will appoint two
interns, one from Indonesia and one from the Netherlands who will work
closely together.

Administration at a renowned Indonesian University or Business School
