************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** From: "nuggets ola" <nuggets@xxxxxxxxx> To: <networknuggets@xxxxxxxxx> Sent: Thu, 06 Mar 2003 09:04:40 -0800 Subject: Women in the Arab World -- Network Nuggets *** [[[ WOMEN IN THE ARAB WORLD ]]] *** http://www.amanjordan.org/english/index.htm To mark International Women's Day on March 8, this is for Social Studies and Modern History teachers. Those who help women plan careers may find it informative also. Bear in mind that it's another "controversial Nugget" and probably not in your standard curriculum. ****************************************************************** THE ECONOMIC EDUCATION NEWSLETTER is an online educational resource for teachers and students provided by the Baltimore Office, Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. The newsletter offers financial literacy and economic education web site information, lesson plans, articles, and other resource topics. Information about high school and college contests, teachers' workshops and other educational programs conducted by the Fed is also provided. If you would like to view previous issues or subscribe, please visit: http://www.rich.frb.org/econed/newsletter/ ****************************************************************** AMAN is a Jordan-based organization supporting the rights of women in the Arab and Muslim world. "Our goals are to maintain a comprehensive collection of materials including books, videos, films, newsletters, periodicals...with an emphasis on making materials available on-line through the project website." For the classroom, the benefit of this site is its list of recent news stories from those regions about the status of women and girls. It's a view from inside, unfiltered by Western journalism. It seems to cover both sides of women's issues, and the written English is of high quality. Your students should find project material here that is readily accessible at their level. It might also provide a bridge for your immigrant students from those regions to share their perspectives with the class. Did you know, for instance, that Iranian women just this year have been allowed into soccer stadiums to watch games? Their attendance was against the law until 2003, and only those who have male relatives playing in the game can attend at the moment, but it's hailed as another small entry for women into society at large. This website is sponsored by the Sisterhood Is Global Institute/Jordan, and carries no advertising. You may find, as I did, that you tend to receive a lot of advocacy emails (spam) from AMAN if you send an email to this site. ---------------------- Network Nuggets is a free service of the Community Learning Network Website (www.cln.org) and the Open Learning Agency of British Columbia (www.openschool.bc.ca).
