Freeway to the Heart: The Power of an Image

"A Photographer needs a short circuit between his brain and his
fingertips...You must be ready to catch the right split second, because if
you miss, the pictures may be gone forever."                        ~ Alfred
Einenstaedt; 1969

An exceptional image has the power to not only grab our attention but to
cause us to change. Our views on social issues like famine, war and
discrimination can be refaced by the time spent viewing a photograph.

In "Freeway to the Heart: The Power of an Image" project, students will
examine photographs that have rocked the people who viewed them. Join the
miidle school students from Master's Academy and College (Calgary, Alberta,
Canada) as they familiarize themselves with Pulitzer Prize winning
photographs and learn that photographs can have a life beyond the moment
they were taken by prompting social change.

MOTIVATE TEACHERS TO USE THE INTERNET
If you want to learn about how to play on the net,
this is where to start. Don't know how to turn on your
computer? Hate this stuff? Is this is totally freakin' you out?
Then You're one of us :-) Playing around is the key to learning.
relax, you can start here, we take baby steps.

For this project students will seek to create their own photographs that
give wings to important messages like "Every person is valuable", "All
children deserve a safe place to live" or " World peace is worth the effort
it takes to keep it". Armed with their photo message, students will be
challenged to uncover concrete ways they can flesh out their photographs'
message in their world.

Through clearly laid out assignment benchmarks and rubrics, students will
incorporate the arts (drama, music and visual arts) and writing skills to
enhance the message of their photographs. This project will help stduents
discover their own voice and how to use photography and writing to
communicate their message to the world. The end result will be a
though-provoking international online photo gallery and it is our hope that
many people will visit. Visit the project page at (put your speakers on):
