According to the latest edition of "What's in the News," a current events series produced for schoolchildren by Penn State Public Broadcasting, the Peace Bell is a gift to the United Nations presented by Japan in 1954. Made from coins collected by Japanese children, the bell is rung each year on the spring equinox, which marks the official beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Since ancient times, people in many cultures have joyously welcomed the return of spring. For example, early inhabitants of Stonehenge, England arranged giant boulders to measure precisely the moment that the equinox arrived. The United Nations chose to celebrate Earth Day on the spring equinox, and in 1971, U.N. Secretary General U Thant began the tradition of ringing the Peace Bell that day. This week, "What's in the News" takes a look at the march toward war with Iraq and other current events.
