Houston's Death Mourned as Questions Swirl

.

(CNN) -- As the the music industry prepared to pay tribute to Whitney Houston at the Grammy Awards Sunday night, the world awaited answers about the last moments of the pop superstar's life.

.

Houston, whose soaring voice and enormous talent were overshadowed in recent years by her battles with drug addiction, was found dead Saturday in a Beverly Hills, California, hotel, hours before she was to attend a pre-Grammy party hosted by the songstress' longtime mentor, Clive Davis. She was 48.

.

Still, questions persisted about the circumstances surrounding her death. Police and fire officials were called to her room at 3:43 p.m. Saturday after her bodyguard found her unconscious body. Attempts to revive her failed.

.

There were "no obvious signs of criminal intent," said Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen. An autopsy is scheduled.

.

Houston's battles with drugs had long made headlines, but she was in the midst of a comeback, with a few shows scheduled and a movie in the works.

.

A music industry executive, who recalled hearing two loud booms from the room below hers -- the room where, she later learned, Houston had died -- said she had seen Houston and her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, swimming in the hotel pool days before.

.

The two looked happy, she recalled, and Houston seemed healthy and beautiful. However, it remained unknown whether the singer had won her battle with substance abuse for good.

.

.

Houston had performed as late as Thursday night at a pre-Grammy event in the area, a raspy rendition "Jesus Loves Me" with singer Kelly Price.

While an autopsy on pop star Whitney Houston could occur in the next day, it is likely to take weeks before the L.A. County coroner's office makes an official cause-of-death ruling.

.

Both the Beverly Hills Police Department and Los Angeles County coroner's office are investigating Houston's death. No cause has been established, and authorities said Saturday night it's too early to determine whether she died of natural causes.

.

"There were no obvious signs of criminal intent," Beverly Hills Police Lt. Mark Rosen said.

Houston was the first superstar to marry a gospel-honed agility and rhythmic intuition with an expert pop balladeer's knack for velvety smoothness and slick drama. Just as Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin respectively set the standard for female pop and soul singers in the '60s, Houston set the standard for pop-soul singers in the '80s.

LOS ANGELES (AP) A year ago, Clive Davis' glittery pre-Grammy showcase was winding down after a number of electric performances when the grandest name of all, Whitney Houston, walked on stage to close the evening with what promised to be a show-stopping tribute to her famous cousin, Dionne Warwick.

.

Instead, what transpired was yet another troubling display of erratic behavior from the superstar, and a foreshadowing perhaps of what was to come.

.

Though she looked spectacular, her once-stunning voice sounded frayed and hoarse. She didn't seem to follow the rehearsed plan and looked out of sorts at times. Even when Davis, her longtime mentor and producer, announced that the show was over, Houston appeared to try to get back on the microphone, only to be stopped by Davis with the joke: "I found you when you were 19; I'm still your boss!"

.

On Saturday, Houston was once again the focus of Davis' annual party, but her presence was a posthumous one. Pop music's former queen, until her majestic voice was ravaged by drug use and her regal image was tarnished by erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, died on the eve of the Grammy Awards she once reigned over. She was 48.

.

Warwick spoke to her over the phone to check that they were seated at the same table at Davis' party, and Cissy Houston talked to her at around 3:15, TMZ reported.

"First of all, I want to tell you that I love you all. Second, I would like to say, I love you Whitney. The hardest thing for me to do is to come on this stage." Houston's ex-husband Bobby Brown, performing a show in Southaven, Miss., hours after her death.

.

"I am devastated by the loss of Whitney. We have lost a true angel. My prayers, my heart goes out to her family. We have lost an extraordinary voice to the world." singer Lionel Richie.

"This is a sad day today, all I want to talk about is her music. She was the most beautiful woman I think I ever saw .... Thank you for giving us your talent, and one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard." Elton John, from the stage at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, before dedicating the song "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" to Houston.

"Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston. I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed." Dolly Parton, who wrote the original version of "I Will Always Love you," which Houston later sang for the film "The Bodyguard."

.

"She had everything, beauty, a magnificent voice. How sad her gifts could not bring her the same happiness they brought us." Barbra Streisand.

Whitney Houston

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitney_Houston

.

Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 February 11, 2012) was an American singer, actress, producer, and model. In 2009, the Guinness World Records cited her as the most-awarded female act of all time.[3] Her list of awards includes two Emmy Awards, six Grammy Awards, 30 Billboard Music Awards, and 22 American Music Awards, among a total of 415 career awards as of 2010. Houston was also one of the world's best-selling music artists, having sold over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide.[4][5] Inspired by prominent soul singers in her family, including her mother Cissy Houston, cousins Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and her godmother Aretha Franklin, Houston began singing with her New Jersey church's junior gospel choir at age 11.[6] After she began performing alongside her mother in night clubs in the New York City area, she was discovered by Arista Records label head Clive Davis. Houston released seven studio albums and three movie soundtrack albums, all of which have diamond, multi-platinum, platinum or gold certification.

.

Houston was the only artist to chart seven consecutive No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hits ("Saving All My Love for You", "How Will I Know", "Greatest Love of All", "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)", "Didn't We Almost Have It All", "So Emotional" and "Where Do Broken Hearts Go"). She was the second artist behind Elton John and the only female artist to have two number-one Billboard 200 Album awards (formerly "Top Pop Album") on the Billboard magazine year-end charts. Houston's 1985 debut album Whitney Houston became the best-selling debut album by a female act at the time of its release. The album was named Rolling Stone's best album of 1986, and was ranked at number 254 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.[7] Her second studio album Whitney (1987) became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 albums chart.[7] Houston's crossover appeal on the popular music charts as well as her prominence on MTV, starting with her video for "How Will I Know",[8] influenced several African-American female artists to follow in her footsteps.[9][10]

.

Houston's first acting role was as the star of the feature film The Bodyguard (1992). The film's original soundtrack won the 1994 Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Its lead single "I Will Always Love You", became the best-selling single by a female artist in music history. With the album, Houston became the first act (solo or group, male or female) to sell more than a million copies of an album within a single week period.[7] The album makes her the only female act in the top 10 list of the best-selling albums of all time, at number four. Houston continued to star in movies and contribute to their soundtracks, including the films Waiting to Exhale (1995) and The Preacher's Wife (1996). The Preacher's Wife soundtrack became the best-selling gospel album in history.[11] Three years after the release of her fourth studio album My Love Is Your Love (1998), she renewed her recording contract with Arista Records.[11] She released her fifth studio album Just Whitney in 2002, and the Christmas-themed One Wish: The Holiday Album in 2003. In 2009, Houston released her seventh studio album, I Look to You.

.

On February 11, 2012, Houston died of unknown causes at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California.[12]
