The obsession of some members of the General Assembly with bringing their
cultural crusades to Richmond has gone too far, and this year is
threatening two things I hold very dear: the ability of a doctor to treat
patients and the ability of our government to address the real problems
facing Virginia.

The doctor-patient relationship is one of the most delicate, private, and
important bonds that exists in our society.
.
During the 2012 General Assembly session, a group of legislators has
unleashed a flood of bills aimed at inserting their personal ideology --
and the authority of the government --into the middle of this
relationship.
.
These anti-abortion lawmakers, some Democratic and some Republican, have
been allowed to push their agenda farther than ever because the Lieutenant
Governor made the shortsighted decision to decree one party control over
an evenly divided Senate, rather than accepting a reasonable power sharing
plan
.

This isn't about whether you're pro-choice or opposed to abortion; it's
about having less government in our lives and trusting women and their
doctors to be the best protectors of life and health.

On the issue of government efficiency, the amount of time we have invested
in debating these mean spirited and misguided proposals, as well as others
designed to penalize welfare recipients, weaken our already lax gun
control laws, and attack gays and racial minorities, has taken our focus
off of what you sent most of us here to do.
.
We spent nearly two hours this week discussing whether or not the state
should compel poor women carrying non-viable fetuses to give birth rather
than pay for them to have a medical intervention that would protect a
doomed child from pain and suffering, and exactly zero minutes discussing
how to improve our struggling public schools.
