John Boehner: No Daylight Between Tea Party and Me

There is no daylight between the tea party and John Boehner, the House
speaker said in an interview released Thursday morning as negotiations to
avert a government shutdown come down to the wire.

Listen, theres no daylight between the tea party and me, the Ohio
Republican said in an interview with ABC News conducted Wednesday.

Democrats say that Boehner is being swayed by the influence of the tea
party movement and have urged him to make a break for the sake of a
bipartisan agreement, but the speaker did not indicate that hes willing to
do so. Im fighting for the largest number of spending cuts possible,
Boehner said. Because it really will help our economy. This is what the
American people had to say last November. They wanted us to cut spending
in Washington, D.C. and they wanted us to do everything we could to help
create jobs in our country.

The interview was conducted before Boehner went to the White House on
Wednesday night for a negotiating session with President Barack Obama,
Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.),
but he indicated that even if there were to be an agreement to fund the
government through the end of fiscal 2011, it would take us a while to
actually put it together. After the meeting, Boehner said there was intent
to try to resolve differences, but negotiators worked through the night to
keep moving toward a deal.

In the interim, House Republicans have proposed a one-week continuing
resolution that would also fund the Defense Department through the end of
the fiscal year and introduce $12 billion in spending cuts. Obama has
indicated that he is opposed to the bill.
