NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY/AP) - After years of planning , light rail has
officially opened to the public and has taken off with passengers in
Norfolk.

In fact, the first day was such a success, according to HRT President
Philip Shucet, the free fare period has been extended through Sunday,
August 28. Paying customers will begin on Monday, August 29.

There are 11 stations along the line, which is Virginia's first light rail
system. Passengers from across the region can use 18 bus routes that feed
into the rail.

Mayor Paul Fraim and the Norfolk City Council were at the Newtown Road
park and ride station for the inaugural train ride. The first train that
left the station was at full capacity, and the crowd cheered when it
arrived at the stop.

There was a brief ribbon cutting just before 6 a.m., and then the train
was loaded.

The round trip to Eastern Virginia Medical School and back took about an
hour, and passengers said the ride was better than expected.

"I've been riding the bus for the last two months, and it's been taking me
three hours to get from Virginia Beach to Portsmouth, so this should cut
two hours off," said Virginia Beach resident Chris Graff.

The start of The Tide light rail service in Norfolk marks a regional
milestone that will be celebrated with a series of public events along the
7.4-mile route.
