Visual images from the 1980s-1990s that depict the railroad and steel industry between Pittsburgh and Chicago with CONRAIL and the LTV Steel Company as the primary focus; includes images of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Union Pacific Railroad, Amtrak, and Union Switch & Signal companies. Lillian Friedberg Postcard Collection

This image collection contains postcard images (1933-1945) from the Friedberg Papers. The earliest postcards, those from the 1933 Chicago Worlds Fair, depict a world full of promise and prosperity, despite being set during the nations worst depression. The later postcards, all pertaining to World War II, tell a much different story through propaganda generated by the British Royal Air Force, French Resistance.



Lyon, Shorb & Company

The Lyon, Shorb & Company online collection contains cartes de viste mass-produced portraits on cardboard backingsof company iron workers posed in stances from 1860 through 1867.



Mesta Machine Company

The Mesta Machine Company online collection contains images from 1906 through 1920 that show the manufacturing of steel mill equipment and machinery, and the construction of several of Mesta's West Homestead production facilities.

A state-wide metadata repository for digital resources created by Pennsylvania libraries, museums, and cultural heritage institutions.



Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company

The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company online collection contains images from 1886 through 1971 showing various branch lines that were controlled by the New York Central from 1883 through 1968, and then by Penn Central. The images also document many non-railroad activities and scenes in urban and rural areas of Western Pennsylvania's Allegheny, Beaver, Fayette, Lawrence, and Washington counties, as well as in some of the bordering counties of West Virginia and Ohio.

"Creator: Pittsburgh City Photographer
Description: Grant Street as seen from the William Penn Hotel with a view of the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church. Plans were drawn up in 1874 for a church building at Penn Avenue and Ninth Street, but were later abandoned when the lot on Grant Street was purchased. The exterior of the present building is dominated by tall gabled roofs and a spire that rises 170 feet.
