Mexico: Lawmakers Propose Tough Penalties
on Media That Don't Grant Right of Reply

[excerpt]

Among the suggested sanctions is the
immediate suspension of broadcasts by
TV and radio stations and an embargo
on circulation of print media that
don't grant the right to reply within
15 days. In addition, columnists
would be required to address
clarifications sought by persons who
feel aggrieved by their writing, and
all media would be required to have an
ombudsman. The legislation would open
the door for "strident politicians"
to appear constantly in the media by
issuing a barrage of replies and
clarifications, Contreras says.
