When city budget cutters mused about closing library branches last month, a mighty roar went up from the city. Angry letters flew, petitions piled up signatures and delegations descended on city hall to cry, Save our libraries.

.

Why do Toronto libraries have such a loyal following in an era when books on paper seem to be going out of style? One reason is that todays libraries provide much more than books. They have evolved into vital community hubs, offering everything from language training to employment services.

.

Walk into a Toronto Public Library branch and you might find a new immigrant typing up his rum a teenager researching a school project on a computer and a group of young mothers practising their English. Libraries offer courses that help newcomers prepare for the citizenship test. They help young adults achieve financial literacy. They offer tutoring for schoolchildren struggling to read.

Libraries like St. James Town are often one of the first places that new immigrants come after they arrive. They come to find books, use the computers or seek help from one of the settlement agencies that works in partnership with the libraries. Many keep coming, using the libraries as an office away from home or a quiet refuge from an apartment crowded with relatives. In a city that welcomes thousands of new immigrants every month, libraries serve as a vital gateway to integration.

.

In one recent case, two new immigrants one from Sri Lanka, one from Somalia met at the library just days after each had arrived in Canada. They fell in love and married, returning to the branch where they met to get a wedding picture taken.

.

The marvel is that in the wireless era, bricks-and-mortar libraries have become not less relevant, but more so. The TPL recorded 18 million visits to its 98 branches in 2010, a 4-per-cent increase over 2009. The number of cardholders rose 4 per cent too, reaching 1.25 million. Library users borrowed 32 million items, making the TPL the busiest big-city library system (based on items borrowed per capita) in the world. No wonder that in a recent public consultation, residents rated libraries a high priority, placing them eighth on a list of 35 city services, ahead of police, parks and recreation centres.
