The post below is my response to a discussion within a discussion regarding middle school and high school censorship of the Wikipedia, (did you know that Larry Sanger reported the Wikimedia Foundation to the FBI for distributing child pornography?)

"I believe Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org/), owned and hosted by the California-based Wikimedia Foundation, may be knowingly distributing child pornography. The clearest instances I found (I did not want to look for long) are linked from [deleting link; it's a category about pedophilia] and [link deleted; it's a category about something called lolicon]. I don't know if there is any more, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is--the content on the various Wikimedia projects, including Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons and various others, are truly vast. "

Before running out and having a public electronic book burning bonfire to protect us from the evils of the Wikipedia, one may want to have a look at this rebuttal.

"I searched Wikipedia for "sex positions", "nudity", "pedophilia", "sexual intercourse" and didn't find anything that would be considered porn in this day and age. There were images that while instructional wouldn't be recommended for use in public schools. More because of society's desire that students learn by doing instead of direct instruction. I would strongly suggest that followers of this debate actually look at the content that is being portrayed as pornographic or objectionable (there were no images on the pedophilia page and it was the most complete and balanced article available for free on the web) before describing Wikipedia as a purveyor of porn. I am alarmed and shocked that educators censor the Wikipedia. There is growing literature that indicates that the Wikipedia is a turn to resource for a large and growing number of college students at some point in most of their research projects. It is a tremendous resource for beginning ones understanding of a topic and its coverage of a wide range of topics is beyond very extensive. Control of the content in this encyclopedia is much stronger than in the days when one could find obituaries of living people. Indeed there is a significant collection of sources that point to errors and mistakes in the Britannica Encyclopedia.

Certainly the Wikipedia is often cited as a source of information in publications and articles.

"Wikipedia -- an online knowledge source used by most college students, according to a recent study -- defines the digital divide as "the gap between people with effective access to digital and information technology and those with very limited or no access at all."

The Wikipedia is certainly more searched in Google than the Britannica as a search term in any language or country.

The Chronicle of Higher Education's Wired Campus cites the heavy use of Wikipedia by college students.

Students Use Wikipedia Early and Often
By Mary Helen Miller
The Chronicle of Higher Education Wired Campus <http://chronicle.com/blogPost/Students-Use-Wikipedia-Early/21850/>

"More than half of college students frequently or always consult Wikipedia for course-related research, according to a report published in First Monday, an online, peer-reviewed journal. Only 22 percent of respondents to the survey said they rarely or never use Wikipedia. The study is based on responses from 2,318 students and qualitative data from 86 who participated in focus groups.

The most common reason that students reported using Wikipedia was to obtain background information or a summary about a topic and to get started with research."

Censorship of the Wikipedia in some middle schools and high schools is not necessarily an indicator that high quality sources for research, bibliographic databases, are part of what teachers in many of these schools are training their students to use for quality research results. My own experience with entering undergraduate students is that they have never heard of the existence of databases despite the fact that these tools are provided by many if not most state governments through public libraries and, for those schools that sign up, K-12 libraries.

Here is the link for such content at the New York Public Library:

<http://www.nypl.org/collections/articles-databases>

Here is a sample of the resources provided from the beginning of the letter A in the New York Public Library's listing of these resources:

Unfortunately, many freshman entering college have also not heard of specialized search tools available to all free on the web from Google and other sources such as Google Scholar, Google Books, Google Government, Google News Archive, SCIRUS and Pogofrog to name some of these critically important resources. Hence censorship in some K-12 communities of the Wikipedia may be compounded in the propagation of information illiteracy amongst America's adolescents by the failure to teach quality alternative research tools that our tax dollars are paying for via community public access in our public libraries, an access that library administrations are most willing to fight for.

Indeed the preoccupation in K-12 since the advent of No Child Left Behind of teaching to the test and the failure in at least a substantial number of K-12 schools to teach research schools could be a major cause of student failure and dropouts at the college level.
