A shorter URL for the above link: . http://tinyurl.com/3of5mbz . .A seed has geminated and poked its shiny green head through the soil. It never ceases to thrill me when this happens. Sometimes I think I start plants indoors just to save my mind in winter. It doesnt even really matter if the plants survive until gardening time. I just want them near me to prove that life can go on even in a frozen tundra.
.About mid-January, when the winter has gripped me about the throat and choked all hope of happiness out of me, the seed catalog offers an escape. As I turn the pages, anything seems possible. Perhaps I will plant peanuts this year and celery. A banana tree would be really nice to have. Im sure it would grow just fine with enough southern exposure. Look at the size of that pumpkin! Wouldnt the grandchildren have fun carving that one? I think Ill order that seed!
.Of course, in January, I cant be expected to remember that our planting zone is somewhat limited ... that a banana tree probably wont thrive here until I see monkeys flying freely through the trees ... that the soil is probably a little too rich and dark for growing peanuts. And celery? How much of that would I need for a couple of batches of potato salad, anyway?
.Im not real successful at my indoor gardening adventures. Ive ruined carpet with over-exuberant watering, not to mention the damage it has caused the woodwork. No human can get close to a window during the months of March and April without moving trays of fragile baby greens. And if Im really honest, there isnt much science involved in my planting process; much of my seedling crop pops through the soil, looks around and hangs its head over the container and dies long before planting time.
. snip .As the temperature climbs and my plants are like teenagers wanting to escape the confines of the house, I am smug about any successes my indoor planting has had. When I see a commercial six pack of seedlings in stores, I silently calculate how much money I saved by starting my own. When I look at recipes, I smile at the thought of plucking my own herbs from just outside my back door. My mind pictures the Garden of Eden that will develop by July.
