. . INDOOR GARDENING: Finding the Right Match . . Finding the Right MatchCOVER STORY: Schefflera or sansevieria? Philodendron or fig? If youre not sure what indoor plants to get, start by assessing your home as a habitat

But it takes some planning to match the plant and the place.
."The light in the home is the key to growing successful plants," said Lynne Kring, general manager at Parkway Gardens Ltd. "You can't take a cactus and throw it in a closet and expect it to thrive."
. The first step to success is assessing your home as a plant habitat. ."Decide where you would like to see a plant and match that with growing conditions," said Janice Merrifield of Van Horik's Greenhouses Ltd. "Decide whether you want a hanging pot, tabletop or floor pot.
."Light is most critical and the one thing you can't control," she said. "Once you've narrowed down how much light it will get, match the plant to the exposure for best success."
.There are three basic amounts of light: direct sun, indirect or low-medium light.
."The number of windows you have, how big they are, it's like CSI for plants," Kring said.
."You could have direct sun in all windows," Merrifield said. "North is the weakest and coolest, generally the darkest. South is the brightest. East is morning light, so it's medium. West is afternoon sun, which is very strong and intense. Even if you have a south window, if there is an apartment building across from you, it won't matter which way the window faces."
.Humidity is another consideration. "Some plants require more, such as ferns," Kring said. Some need daily misting, others occasionally and some need it several times a day. Those that like a lot of humidity survive best in a bathroom or kitchen where there is steam in the air.
."A lot of plants will adapt to their surroundings as long as they are properly watered, fertilized and repotted when needed," Kring said.
