Volcanic Ash Cloud: Misery for a Million as Airlines Count the Cost
More than a million British airline passengers have been left stranded or
had their plans disrupted by the volcanic ash cloud sweeping across
Europe.

With the skies over England and Wales having been closed for almost two
days, the British airline industry is in the grip of an unprecedented
shutdown. An estimated 500,000 people pass through British airports every
day. For the past 48 hours, almost all have seen their flights cancelled
by the fallout from the Icelandic volcano.
Another 200,000 Britons who want to fly back into the country are now
thought to be stranded. Those in far-flung destinations have been told
they may not be able to return for nine days.

Experts said the travel misery could last a fortnight. But volcanologists
warned that the ash cloud was moving towards the South East and showed few
signs of abating.
Even when British airspace fully reopens, the backlog of flights will take
days to clear.
The shutdown engulfed most of Europe yesterday, with 16,000 of the usual
28,000 flights across the Continent cancelled.
