A Purdue University student is asking women around the world Monday to
show a little cleavage, or some short shorts, as a humorous test to
disprove an Iranian clerics theory that immodest dress has the power to
make the Earth shake.
She calls it boobquake, and it has become an Internet and international
sensation in just a few days.
Jennifer McCreight, a double major in genetics and evolution, was
incredulous when she read news reports Monday that Iranian cleric
Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi said promiscuous women were responsible for
earthquakes.
Many women who do not dress modestly ... lead young men astray, corrupt
their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently)
increases earthquakes, Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.
As a scientist I had to challenge it, McCreight said. It started out as a
sarcastic joke that I fired off before I went to watch House.
Not expecting a major response McCreight, who writes frequently at her
Blag Hag Web site, created a boobquake Facebook group to help fight
supernatural thinking and the oppression of women, just by showing your
cleavage.

Social Networking Group May yet Grab Two Million Boobs for the Cause
Is Boobquake the biggest testament yet to the power of the Internet and
Facebook in particular?
Unless you have been unplugged for the past 24 hours, you have probably
now heard about Boobquake; a distributed "event" being held on Monday,
April 26th.
As of right now, nearly 150,000 women (and some men) have signed up on
Facebook to 'attend' the event, which is really a mass demonstration of
how ludicrous they find the comments of Iranian cleric Hojatoleslam Kazem
Sedighi, who said on April 16, "Many women who do not dress modestly ...
lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in
society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes".

McCreight said, "On Monday, April 26th, I will wear the most
cleavage-showing shirt I own. Yes, the one usually reserved for a night on
the town. I encourage other female skeptics to join me and embrace the
supposed supernatural power of their breasts. Or short shorts, if that's
your preferred form of immodesty."
In subsequent posts throughout the week, McCreight said that she thought
that she was mostly just making a point and thought it would receive very
little attention. She created a Facebook group and event page, mostly for
amusement and laughs.
How wrong she was.

reportedly thundered, was Iran, aspiring nuke newbie. But Tehran's acting
Friday prayer leader begs to differ. The causes of natural disasters, he
suggests, are neither natural nor man-made; they're unnatural and
woman-made. The culprit? Comely Calamity Jane.
The earth trembles, the cleric asserts, when promiscuous women flaunt
their vital stats and provoke lasciviousness in chaste men. No wonder
Tehran residents aren't listening to president Ahmadinejad's exhortations
to flee a quake-threatened read: temptress-infested capital. Now we know
that, to create terrestrial (and libidinous) havoc, America's quake-bombs
are no match for bombshells.
Perhaps inspired by Gandhian moral causalism, the femme fatale has her own
view on nature's fury.

Ever since we heard an Iranian cleric explain that scantily clad and
promiscuous women are the cause of earthquakes, we just can't get Carole
King out of our heads: "I feel the earth move under my feet, I feel the
sky tumbling down."
Of course, that's not the kind of sexual seismology Hojatoleslam Kazem
Sedighi had in mind when he told worshipers in Tehran last week that women
who dress immodestly corrupt young men and lead them to adultery, thereby
increasing earthquakes. "What can we do to avoid being buried under the
rubble?" he asked. "There is no other solution but to take refuge in
religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes."

Stop smirking. I am hugely serious. People are dying. Buildings are
collapsing. Humanity is in dire peril, because the other kind of peril is,
presumably, actually sort of nice.
Let us pose our query to the experts. Let us ask, say, Hojatoleslam Kazem
Sedighi, a senior Iranian cleric, one of those gnarled, severe,
crusted-over Muslims you should always turn to with the big questions
about women, love and man's imminent downfall, because hoary old guys like
him never lie or make s-- up just to maintain their power, authority and
secret access to gay prostitutes and cocaine. Let's see what Sedighi says:

their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently)
increases earthquakes."
Yea! Testify! Sedighi hath spoken! Mumbled his Great Truth though a
tangled beard and 5,000 years of misogyny, as he apparently vies for the
title of Greatest Non-Sequitur Ever Uttered. Yes, Sedighi officially
blamed Iran's deadly earthquakes on his country's promiscuous women and
their terrifying scarves.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has never been a refuge for proponents of
human rights. Similarly, its government has a pesky habit of treating
women like chattel; personal property to be manipulated and/or abused as
one sees fit. In todays political climate, a woman is safer walking the
darkened streets of downtown Detroit than she is strolling through Tehran
at noon. Sadly, this situation is about to get much worse.
Iranian cleric Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi recently stated that women who
wear inappropriate, suggestive or revealing clothing are responsible for
the countrys earthquakes. Seriously. Heck, if that were the case,
California would have fallen into the sea the second Britney Spears
arrived in Hollywood. Nevertheless, Sedighi seems to have the opinion that
loose blouses sink houses:
In a prayer sermon, the cleric said: 'Many women who do not dress
modestly... lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread
adultery in society, which increases earthquakes.'

One would think that considering the countrys desert climate, the clerics
would give Iranian women a little slack; maybe let them put on a pair of
regime approved culottes or something. But no, they have to swelter in the
midday sun because a baggy scarf may cause the big one. Sedighi continues:

In Iran, these calamities are omnipresent. Thankfully, Sedighi has some
all-encompassing explanations for the countrys pending natural disasters.
Heavy rains and flash floods occur because Iranian women shower without
their veils. Droughts happen when teenage girls apply makeup. Wildfires?
They are common because middle-aged women suffer from hot flashes. It is
probably best not to ask why tornadoes exist.
