Pakistani officials say the death toll from floods caused by heavy monsoon rains has risen to more than 800, and rescue workers are struggling to reach thousands of stranded villagers.

Authorities say four days of pounding rain have inundated Pakistan's northwest, while in Afghanistan's east and northeast 64 people have died.

Meanwhile, the U.N. estimated Saturday that some 1 million Pakistanis have been affected by the disaster, with thousands of homes, roads and farms destroyed.

The UN's Manuel Bsssler in Pakistan says many areas are cut off
The worst monsoon floods in living memory have killed at least 800 people and affected one million in north-west Pakistan, a local official has said.

Rescuers are struggling to reach inundated areas where transport and communication are down.

Peshawar, the area's largest city with a 3m-strong population, is cut off.

At least 60 people have died across the border in Afghanistan where floods affected four provinces.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, information minister for Pakistan's Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa (formerly North-West Frontier) province, announced the latest death toll. Earlier, he described the floods as the province's worst ever.

Manuel Bessler, the head of the UN's Office for the Coordination for Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA) in Pakistan, told the BBC about 1m people's lives had been disrupted.

He could not say with certainty the full scale of the emergency in Pakistan, as he was having trouble reaching his own offices in some of the worst-affected areas.

UN aid workers were helping to co-ordinate efforts to provide shelter, health care, drinking water and ready-to-eat food rations, he said.

There was concern, he added, that swollen rivers running south would carry the floods to provinces like Sindh where heavy rain was forecast in coming days.

Washed away

The government declared a state of emergency as Pakistan's meteorological department said 312mm (12in) of rain had fallen over the last 36 hours in the north-west - the largest amount for decades.

Muqaddir Khan, 25, who arrived with nine other family members, told AFP in a suburb of Peshawar that he had lost everything in flood.

I laboured hard in Saudi Arabia for three years and set up a small shop which was swept away by flood in minutes. I have lost everything, Mr. Khan said.

Razia Bibi, 48, said she and her family spent the night awake as water kept rising.

My house is now gone under water and I could escape with a few belongings, Ms. Bibi told AFP.

Authorities are using school buildings in Peshawar to shelter those affected by the floods.

The army said it had sent boats and helicopters to rescue stranded people and its engineers were trying to open roads and divert water from key routes.

The flooding capped a week of tragedy for Pakistan, after an airliner crashed into hills near Islamabad Wednesday, killing 152 people on board.

Pakistans weather bureau said an unprecedented 312 millimetres of rain had fallen in 36 hours in the northwest but predicted only scattered showers during coming days.

At least one million people in the northwest have been affected by the worst monsoon since 1929, the UN office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said.

Torrential rains had breached flood defences and caused many rivers to burst their banks. Various areas in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, including Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera, were affected by flooding for the fifth day today.

Provincial capital Peshawar, which has a population of about three million, has been cut off for the past three days.

Some 200 Chinese nationals working on a hydropower project were trapped in Kohistan district.

People continued to flee the inundated areas in trucks and makeshift boats. Rescuers were struggling to reach inundated areas where flooded rivers have swept away roads and bridges and snapped communication links.

Geo News channel aired dramatic footage of riverside houses and hotels being swept away by the swollen Swat river in the Kalam area. Reports from the region said over 300 houses had been destroyed by the rains and flooding.

In Punjab, about 3,000 people were stranded in Taunsa Sharif due to floods. Over 100 villages have been flooded in Mianwali.

An emergency was declared in Dera Ghazi Khan, Bhakkar, Muzaffarghar and Rajanpur as they could be affected when inflows of up to 900,000 cusecs cross the Taunsa Barrage during August 1-3, officials said.
