(CNN) -- Fires burned in northeastern Japan Monday evening after a powerful earthquake shook the region, sending a landslide into Iwaki City, authorities said.

.

A preliminary estimate put the quake's magnitude at 7.1, which was later lowered to 6.6, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Residents in Tokyo also felt the jolts.

.

A tsunami warning issued by Japan's Meteorological Agency was canceled.

Japanese officials issued tsunami warnings and evacuated a crippled nuclear plant after a strong earthquake struck the nation's northeast coast Monday.

.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude of the quake at 7.1, the same strength as a major aftershock that hit on Thursday. Japan's NHK Television said a tsunami of up to one meter was expected along portions of the northeast coast, the same area that was hit by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

.

Officials at the Fukushima nuclear plant, which has been leaking radiation since the March 11 quake, said workers had been temporarily evacuated. They said power from off-site to three of the plant's units was disrupted and that the pumping of cooling water to the units had been temporarily suspended, but they do not consider the situation to be dangerous.

.

The latest aftershock came almost exactly one month after the 9.0 magnitude March 11 quake, which caused a tsunami that washed away whole towns and villages along the country's northeast coast. Across Japan, citizens paused and offered prayers at 2:46 p.m. local time ((0546 UTC)), the precise moment of the quake.

.

More than 13,000 bodies have been recovered and more than 14,000 remain missing, many still lying under the rubble or washed out to sea.

.

Monday, authorities announced preparations to expand the 20-kilometer evacuation zone around the Fukushima plant. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said residents should prepare to evacuate from certain towns and villages outside the zone as soon as radiation levels exceed pre-determined levels.

A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit Japan about 60 kilometers from Tokyo Electric Power Co.s stricken nuclear power plant, prompting a tsunami warning and shaking buildings in the countrys capital.

.

The quake struck at 5:16 p.m. local time 38 kilometers (24 miles) west of Iwaki and 163 kilometers from Tokyo at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. USGS revised the magnitude down from 7.1 earlier.

.

The second-highest tsunami warning was issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency, which said a surge as high as 2 meters (6.6 feet) is possible on parts of the eastern coast of Honshu. There is no threat of a widespread destructive tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

.

The quake registered as high as minus-6, the third-highest level on the Japanese scale of seismic intensity, in parts of Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures, according to the weather agency. National broadcaster NHK Television showed footage of fishing boats heading out to sea to avoid a tsunami.
