Government Troops Pursue Syrian Rebels After Referendum

BEIRUT, Lebanon A day after a referendum on a new constitution, Syrian
government troops were reported on Tuesday to be pushing toward opposition
strongholds in and near the central city of Homs as news reports, yet to
be officially confirmed, suggested that efforts to rescue two Western
journalists trapped there had succeeded.

Determined to tightly control political change in Syria in the face of an
insurrection, the government announced Monday that nearly 90 percent of
voters in a referendum had approved a new Constitution.
.
Western leaders and opponents of the government called the ballot a farce
and its result a hoax, while Russia and China, two of Syrias few remaining
international friends, called it a step toward reform.

Syrias leaders have matched their offer of limited change with a ferocious
crackdown on civilian opponents and armed rebels besieged in enclaves such
as the neighborhood of Baba Amr in Homs where a government bombardment
last week killed two Western journalists and injured two others.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that government troops had shelled an
opposition stronghold in Hama Province north of Homs while, in the city
itself, a tank column was moving closer to Baba Amr. Beleaguered
neighborhoods of Homs have been under sustained, daily attack for almost
three and a half weeks.

Separately, news reports on Tuesday said that Paul Conroy, a British
photographer wounded in Homs last week, had been smuggled out of Syria to
neighboring Lebanon.
