A massive magnitude 8.8 earthquake rocked Chile early Saturday, killing atleast 122 people and triggering tsunami warnings for the entire Pacificbasin.

Numerous tsunami waves have been reported in the Pacific, with onereaching as high as 7.7 feet in the central Chile coastal town ofTalcahuano, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

Sirens sounded at 6 a.m. Friday across Hawaii, warning people of apossible tsunami and telling people in coastal areas to evacuate.

"They're going to sound the sirens to air on the side of caution and makesure there's enough time to get people out of the evacuation zones, whichare the coastal areas that may be affected," Brian Shiro of the PacificTsuanmi Warning Center said.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said she expected the death toll inher country to rise.


"We are taking all the necessary measures at this time," she said.

"I would like to offer my condolences to the families of the 122 peoplewho lost their lives during the earthquake," said Chilean President-ElectSebastian Pinera. "And by the way, the number of victims could gethigher."

Officials did not give any information on the number of those injured. Thefull extent of the damage was not yet known, although there were reportsof collapsed buildings and hundreds of people in the streets.

The capital of Santiago lost electricity and basic services includingwater and telephones. Bachelet said regional hospitals had suffereddamage; some were evacuated. A major bridge connecting northern andsouthern Chile was rendered inoperable, and the Santiago airport was shutdown for at least the next 24 hours.

SANTIAGO, Feb 27 (Reuters) - A huge magnitude-8.8 earthquake struck Chileearly on Saturday, killing at least 122 people, knocking down homes andhospitals, and triggering a tsunami that rolled menacingly across thePacific.

TV Chile reported that a 15-storey building collapsed in the hardest-hitcity of Concepcion, where buildings caught fire, major highway bridgescollapsed and cracks opened up in the streets. Cars turned upside down layscattered across one damaged bridge.

Residents huddled in streets full of rubble of masonry and glass fromdestroyed homes. Many were terrified by powerful aftershocks anddesperately trying to call friends and family.

Chilean President-elect Sebastian Pinera said 122 people had been killedand the death toll could climb higher.

Tsunami warnings were posted around the Pacific, including the U.S. stateof Hawaii, Japan and Russia.

Telephone and power lines were down in much of central Chile, making itdifficult to assess the full extent of the damage close to the epicenter.

Chile is the world's No. 1 copper producer, and the quake haltedoperations at two major mines.

"Never in my life have I experienced a quake like this, it's like the endof the world," one man told local television from the city of Temuco,where the quake damaged homes and forced staff to evacuate the regionalhospital.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake struck 70 miles (115 km)northeast of Concepcion at a depth of 22 miles (35 km) at 3:34 a.m. (0634GMT).

The capital Santiago, about 200 miles (320 km) north of the epicenter, wasalso badly hit. The international airport was closed for at least 24 hoursas the quake destroyed passenger walkways and shook glass out of doors andwindows.

Chile's Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, suspended operationsat its El Teniente and Andina mines, but reported no major damage and saidit expected the mines to be up and running in the "coming hours."
