Okay the typo fix did work. but still have the old 31.22 as the kernel. How do I get to the newer kernels now?

Here is that output:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package headers-generic

So as root run:
apt-get purge linux headers-generic linux-image-generic

Apt isn't removing anything, so when you run the update/install there is nothing to do for those packages. Maybe try something like....

apt-get purge linux-headers-generic linux-image-generic

Simple typo, fix that and it should work when you follow the rest of the steps that Chuck detailed.
