Yes, you can take a dilapidated old run-down worthless computer and load
Linux on it.  The article states that he spent $20 on his Sun system. 
For that kind of money one would have an OK graphical terminal.  Don't
expect it's graphics to be all that - your not likely to get
Compiz-Fusion <http://www.compiz-fusion.org/> quality output - but it'd
be enough for generic Web surfing.  You will want to spend some money on
a "server" to actually run your applications on too...

If you value your time trying to shoehorn a contemporary OS on ancient
hardware is not the way to go.  I know that I will think twice about
trying to play with anything more than 4-5 years old...
