Mallonga 'Emir of Jihad' THE idea of a terrorist on the loose is extremely terrifying. It sends shock waves across the globe, especially when that terrorist has already been convicted and incarcerated for planning Southeast Asia's destruction through the extremist organization, Jemaah Islamiah. Especially when that terrorist is Southeast Asia's Emir of Jihad Abu Bakar Bashir. Osama bin Laden organized terrorist organizations under the al-Qaeda umbrella throughout the world seeking Islamic domination particularly in countries identified to be part of Islam's territorial domain. Bin Laden's philosophy emanates from the radical strain of Saudi Arabia's Islamic Wahhabism, which propagates the belief that holy wars must be waged so that Islam becomes the dominant religion, if not the only religion, in the world. But the danger in such a philosophy lies in the lack of tolerance for any opposition or objection to it. People are killed because of their lack of faith in their leader. People are killed because they wish to enjoy sunning and strolling in the beaches of Southeast Asia. People are killed because they do not practice Wahhabism or, at the very least, Sunni Islam. People are killed because they are Shiite Muslims, or Jews, or Christians, or just plain Westerners. Abu Bakar Bashir, cofounder of Jemaah Islamiah and cleric of Wahhabi Islam, has just been released from a city jail of Jakarta, Indonesia. The ultimate goal of Jemaah Islamiah is to create a super-Islamist state that integrates Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries with a substantial Muslim population. It primarily targets Western interests and Westerners, but local Asians, including Muslims, often get killed as part of the collateral damage of the jihad being waged. Muslim civilians, including women and children, are deemed expendable. The 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings, and the bombings in Jakarta, Manila and Davao, which resulted in the slaughtering of hundreds of people, including innocent Muslims, are attributable to the terrorist organization that has been set loose by bin Laden and Abu Bakar Bashir in Southeast Asia. What is surprising is that in Indonesia, Jemaah Islamiah is even recognized as a legal organization while its leaders plan out the destruction of democratic governments all across Southeast Asia. Abu Bakar Bashir leads that organization under an Islamic Wahhabi philosophy, teaching the radical strain of jihad as the foremost pillar of Islam; he claims moral ascendancy and influence as preacher and teacher of Hambali, Indonesia's convicted Bali bomber; and he cooperates and conspires with Jemaah Islamiah's founder Sungkar in spreading Wahhabi Islam and spawning Southeast Asia's most heinous terrorists through dormitory schools. Yet he remains untouched and has just been released by Indonesia's government to once again roam an unsuspecting world and terrorize its free peoples. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono could have observed the maximum sentence over Bashir to prevent the mainstreaming of his terrorist philosophy in madrassah schools once again. Yet Yudhoyono cut Bashir's sentence by a third in honor of Indonesia's 60th anniversary last year, and further reduced the cleric's jail sentence for "good behavior" in an unprecedented exercise of executive clemency. With partisan support from the Prosperous Justice Party, a conservative Islamist party, the Indonesian leader continues to ignore the dangers emanating from his Wahhabi supporters nurturing a jihadist philosophy. Even attacks on another Muslim order, the Ahmadiyah, which was started in India in 1989 and founded by Mirza Gulam Ahmad on an Islamist philosophy of peace, have not been quelled by Yudhoyono's administration. Former Indonesian dictator Suharto outlawed the Ahmadiyah as heretical while last year, under Yudhoyono's government, the quasi-official Ulema Council issued a fatwah (religious edict) condemning the group, resulting in violent attacks on Ahmadiyah's members. Attacks on Ahmadis continue even as they worship Allah and profess that Muhammad is Allah's Prophet while similar attacks take place in other Islamic countries against the Muslim Shiites simply because they value different tenets of Islam. It appears that with the rise of the Prosperous Justice Party, the power of the Indonesia Ulema Council, the release of Abu Bakar Bashir and his control over religious madrassah dormitories, peace and freedom are fast becoming rare, valuable commodities in Indonesian society. To them, Islamic brotherhood means solidarity exclusively among those who practice Wahhabi and Sunni Islam, with extreme intolerance, oftentimes meaning death, for those who emphasize other pillars of Islam over jihad or practice in accordance with other tenets of the prophetic traditions. Certainly, there is a heroic appeal in the idea of a man risking life and limb for a religious cause; many young minds are enticed to heed the call. Until it becomes personal. Until we cuddle dying, innocent children, quivering with their last breath, in our arms-maybe our own children-all because of a call to war. In that moment, we must realize the value of human life over anything, over religion, over politics, over our hatred for the insensitivity of the West. In the end, we must all ask how Allah can be the reason for the destruction of innocent human life, which is His creation.
