GENERAL NEWS
· CLUB MEMBERSHIP – Officers have been asked by a number of players,
“How can I sign up to be a member of the Shasta Valley Pickleball Club”
o We have intentionally decided to not actively promote membership until
after March 25th because…
§ We are still in-the-midst of some formalities, like opening a bank account
and establishing our By-laws. So, we feel it would be best to have some systems
in place before we have more membership issues to sort out.
§ We are offering one more chance to get a free membership with your $20 March
25th Scramble registration. So, we wanted to let people get one more chance at
our “FREE MEMBERSHIP” before we started our formal membership campaign.
§ After March 25th, we will be offering general membership for $20.
§ If you get your membership form in before May 1st, you will get the honor of
being a, “Founding Member of the Shasta Valley Pickleball Club”!
§ WE CURRENTLY HAVE 22 MEMBERS, who participated in the Feb. 4th Dink Scramble.
· SPORTSMANSHIP ISSUES – As officers we have been asked to address the
difficult topic of “How to Deal with Poor Sportsmanship or Disrespectful
Behavior.”
o Because club officers may not want to be seen as Sheriff’s and/ or Referees
in difficult situations, and
o Because officers cannot legally exclude players from playing on public
property or at the YMCA.
o We are suggesting the following steps be taken when unsportsmanlike or rude
behavior is being displayed by anyone.
§ State simply – “I would prefer to play in games where sportsmanship and
general respect for all, is being practiced. So, at this point, I am choosing
to remove myself from this game.”
§ Then simply step out of the game and arrange to play on a different court.
DO NOT CONFRONT OR ARGUE. Let your actions speak for you. Others can choose to
join you, or continue with the game, by replacing you, if they are not aligned
with your concerns.
o This passive approach to resolve a conflict, will not feel passive at all,
in fact it will be difficult at first. But remember, we all have the right to
play in games where others are respected, and good sportsmanship is being
practiced. Which also means, we all have the right not play when people are
not being respected, and good sportsmanship is not being practiced.
o Our culture should be fun, welcoming, and respectful of all players, and we
should all take responsibility to make that true.
