I quite like gedit, but, I have to honest in that I don't really do that much with my computers nowadays (using them for work takes some of the fun out of fiddling with them at home... that's why I branched out into GNU/Linux - a whole new world to learn). Supposedly AbiWord compiles and runs on OS X X11, but, unfortunately I don't have the OS X developers tools installed so I can't find out :-( (i d/l it yesterday & discovered the lack of the dev tools when I went to run the compile script). Also, not quite X11, but there's a PERL-based app called WebMin (<http://www.webmin.com/>) which allows you to control a _lot_ of under-the-hood OS X functionality, and, especially the hidden servers. I'm sure someone knowledgeable could turn OS X into a pretty reasonable competitor with OS X server using WebMin (you'd be surprised just how much functionality is built-in into OS X). Once installed you access it via http://localhost:10000. Actually, if you -really- want to play with some X11 apps, why not try them in an environment built around/for X11, KDE or GNOME (GNOME is my preferred b/c it's simpler) ;-P. The GNU/Linux distros for the Mac are all "moderately" user-friendly insofar as they'll install without any hitches (about as easy as installing OS X I'd say, except for needing to partition). Ubuntu works nicely and is designed around the philosophy of bringing GNU/Linux to the masses (i.e. simplicity is the key) but since it is brand spanking new (1 month) I'm sure there are still rough edges and is missing some packages. YDL 3.0.1 is pretty good (albeit feeling quite dated beside Ubuntu) and YDL 4.0's release as a free download is imminent (it's been on sale for a month or so) and should bring it up to parity with Ubuntu. I have no experience with the other distros on the Mac. I'd also say the installs are often less irritating than and don't violate your privacy like OS X since Apple insists on collecting personal information about you and REFUSES to allow you to opt out (they're no better than Microsloth) or enter blatently false info (like phone number 111-111-1111 & they've had a lot of "noneofyourbusiness", "gotohell" and even more colourful combinations for addresses, names, etc. which mysteriously don't point to any real places or people).
