No. An archive and install will not wipe out OS 9. Upgrading from 10.1.4 to
10.2 will also not wipe out OS 9. Only if you choose to erase the disk when
you install OS X 10.2 will you wipe out OS 9.

BTW There's a chance that your install CD for OS X 10.2 will not be able to
do an "Archive and Install". Upgrade CDs can't do archive and install and
can only upgrade 10.1.x to 10.2.

If you do an archive and install or an upgrade all settings will be kept
intact. I'm leery of major OS upgrades so I *always* do a clean install of
an OS. But, since you've only had the computer a week you can probably do
the upgrade without worries.

True, but then you're "suffering" with OS 9. OS X 10.2.6 *really* is that
much more stable than OS 9, and by getting used to OS X you get to use all
the cool new applications.

I'm not kidding when I say I NEVER have to three-finger restart my
PowerBook: I haven't had a system crash in around two months now, and can
count on one hand the number of crashes in the past 4 months (10.2.4 was
giving me modem headaches). It's funny, but even OS 9 seems more stable
running as the "application" Classic compared to when it's running on its
own as OS 9.

PS Digital cameras are now ready to replace the old point-and-shoot 35 mm
ones, especially if all you do is take pictures for your photo album. I just
got back a bunch of pics from a mid-range point-and-shoot 35 mm and I'd say
only 5 or 6 out of the 24 pictures were actually worth keeping. $6 for 2x5
pictures + 19 pieces of photo paper *wasted*). On-line those 5 pictures
would've cost $2 to develop and I'd be a lot happier with the pics (b/c the
5 that are keepers are only marginal keepers and with a digital camera you
can shoot a whole bunch of pictures of the same scene).

PSS 3 vs 4 megapixels: unless you have lots of spare cash to spend on toys,
I'd say get a 3 megapixel with good lens, good features instead of a 4
megapixel with cheap lens and crappy features. 3 MP is more than enough for
sharp 4x6 pics.

PSSS Did I mention http://www.lensandshutter.com? I ordered pictures from
them and it was an easy process. Download their software. Drop the pictures
you want printed on the app. Enter your info (address, credit card), and the
pics are sent to your door ($0.40/pic, only 7% GST (BC company) and $2
shipping)... FutureSlop and Lobmall also do on-line printing.

Eric.
