Subject: The Highland Walking Society 2019 Season
Hello everyone,
I hope that you're all keeping well and have had a good Christmas.
So to cut to the chase, there will definitely be two Highland Walking Society
trips during 2019, but with the added opportunity to do some more.
The definite ones will be Sections 1 and 2 of the Pyrenean High Route. It will
be possible to do just one Section, or both back to back; these will take place
during July and will require approximately 10 days each.
In comparison with the Alps, the Pyrenees are considerably more wild and
undeveloped and as such these walks are much more of a 'travel' experience as
well as spectacular mountain journeys.
Section 1 - Lescun to Garvanie (staying each night in a refuge)

We did this Section last year and I'd forgotten just how good this one is (I'd
last done it over twenty years before). It's beautiful (in fact there's one day
that passes through possibly the most beautiful mountain terrain that I've
experienced to date), at times challenging - some days are long, the climbs
significant (3,000ft each day) and the ice cold lakes are the only washing
facilities, but it's spectacular and completely unforgettable. Weather
permitting we’ll summit the Petit Vignemale (3,032m). Have a look at the

Section 2 - Garvanie to Salardu (staying each night in a refuge)

This is a continuation of the highest part of the route. Some say it's the most
difficult part of the High Route primarily because of some particularly long
days, difficult terrain (scree, late snow fields, boulder fields, etc.) and
some lengthy off-path sections requiring good mountain navigation skills. So
this one certainly can be challenging, but definitely not one beyond the
abilities of very many of you. It's very wild, spectacular, beautiful and an
experience you’ll never forget.
Other options
And, if you or a group of you (however small) are interested in going to any
other of the world’s mountainous areas during in 2019, just let me know where
and I'd be happy to investigate, set up and lead the trip.
So, if you're interested in any of the above options let me know as soon as you
can and I'll provide more detailed information, then firm up dates and book the
refuges.
