I do not intend to be rude. But I thought I made it clear that slow speed does not concern us. So far all you discussed is the merits or demerits of having such a connection. It does not help us to know how exactly it is done, all other considerations aside. Tom Erdely <tom@xxxxxxxxx> wrote: Keep in mind that when using Remote Desktop, you will still be downloading screen refreshes and uploading keystrokes and mouse movements. The slowest part about general internet surfing is downloading images. There is no way around this, so your surfing via remote desktop would be hampered by your dial up speed. Without a connection to the internet cafe that is at least as fast as the cafe's connection, you will not see the same speeds. There is no way to use a slow internet connection to connect to a computer running a fast connection, and in turn take advantage of that connection. I have a 2 MB connection from my home to my office, and a 10 MB connection from my office to the internet. Surfing over the 2 MB line is, as expected, fine. However, connecting to my office PC using remote desktop, then using the offices 10 MB line is not nearly as good. I hope that made sense. Unless you would just like to dial directly to the XP machine (point 1) below, your speed won't really be any better than using the ISPs connection for internet. Hope that helps, Tom Erdely http://erdely.no -----Original Message----- From: mswindowsxp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mswindowsxp-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Steven Peck DNET Sent: 6. desember 2002 01:03 To: 'mswindowsxp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [mswindowsxp] Re: Setting up a remote computer as an Internet provider Two possible answers; 1. Put a modem on the XP system, configure RAS dial directly, remote control and go. 2. Dial up your local ISP. Configure the WinXP for remote desktop, SECURE, open Open the correct port in your firewall (1494 IIRC). Use Windows Remote Desktop through the Internet. Theoretically this should work, haven't done it. -sp -----Original Message----- From: Chris Ruggeri [mailto:cruggeri@xxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Thursday, December 05, 2002 3:54 PM To: mswindowsxp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mswindowsxp] Re: Setting up a remote computer as an Internet provider I did misunderstand...sorry...but this is to connect to my xp pro machine @ work to improve my browse performance. server. I always connect to my xp pro machine @ work after I dial up via remote desktop connection to browse the web just for the performance increase( work has a t1 and we only have dial up in our tiny little town and I have no line of sight to get a wireless connection :( ). My apology if that was useless info for you. Aren't you just describing a way to remotely access the server? I am not interested in accessing the server. I just want the server to share its internet connection remotely. Chris Ruggeri wrote: All you should need to do is go to system properties and click on the remote option, and under remote desktop allow users to connect to this computer. I have the XP firewall turned off and allow our firwall to handle security. There should not be anything more to it. The only issue with XP pro is it only allows one connection @ a time. At least, that is the only functionality I have been able to get it to work so far. Maybe the gurus in this group could add some suggestions. Someone asked me if it's possible to connect to one of his computer in his internet cafe not to access the computer remotely and not for the speed but to take advantage of it's internet connection (unlimited DSL). So effectively the remote computer would become an ISP of sorts albeit with just one client. I told him it is possible coz someone told me a while back that XP has a built-in way to do this. I told him to setup an account with the remote server for the client computer. But as to how to set up the remote server, I don't exactly know how to go about it. Anyone has any ideas? Was I wrong to suggest that this is possible? Owner/Moderator of "My Computer Headaches" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mycomputerheadaches/. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
