......I have used compatability mode to resolve permission issues...not
just windows version issues........most of the time, it works....a
couple of times...I saw it hasn't...
... We actually distribute just such an application....utilizing Btrieve
6.15 as a free backend bundled with the app...it is legacy and we have
no ability to modify that product, we can and do have a list of registry
entries and files that need permissions assigned to allow standard users
to run the app and access the Btrieve system files...
(if Btrieve IS the problem...e-mail me offlist and I can give you all
of the files and registry entries to successfully run as a standard user
.....which it seems most vendors should know their product well enough
to do that.....)
another method I have used in the past is using Dependency Walker on
the executable....which will list all files that executable are
dependent on to run.....an initial export of the registry prior to
install and then an export after the install and a file compare will
tell you where registry permission need to be set.....@ that
point....you will apparently know more about running the app then the
vendor if they aren't of any help!...then apply necessary permissions or
use a script with setacl.exe to apply the appropriate permissions if
this needs to be done repeatedly.

We have a similar issue with an application vendor stating the user's
need
to be "Power User" level or higher. I have tried all the work-around's
and
found nothing that would work. The vendor states that this is
Microsoft's
development fault and they will do nothing to resolve it. It stinks!
