I am using XP and I have dont the system restore twice now with no luck,
once to a point prior to the date and one to a date prior to that.

I am not exactly sure what has happened, but you can
try to do a system restore. Restore your computer to a
time when you know everything worked fine.
Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->System
Restore. This is in XP. What is your operating system?
