Parker, Remember, 90% of all computer problems seem to be PEBKAC! For those of you who haven't heard that acronym, or have only heard it from their tech support people in reference to them: Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair James -----Original Message----- From: PRenaud@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:PRenaud@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2003 2:00 PM To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [mso] Re: exe files :VSMail mx2 I am the IT Manager of a small company with 93 e-mail users. Some are employees and some are independent sales agents. They range in ability from very computer literate to those who can hardly remember from one day to the next how to check their e-mail. I love the fact that Microsoft has made it difficult to open certain e-mail attachments. It makes my job much easier. We still have users who will open any attachment they get and never think to scan them for viruses. We have received over 11,850 e-mails containing the sobig virus. Fortunately, our Exchange Virus Scan removes the virus and replaces it with an alert.txt file. If it did not, there is no telling how many of our users would be spreading the virus now. Here is a typical exchange with a computer-challenged user: User: I opened a file in an e-mail and it says something about a virus. IT Guy: Why did you open the file? Were you expecting an attachment from the sender? User: No, but if they took the trouble to send me something, I thought it was just polite to see what it was. IT Guy: Don't you remember that I told you never to open attachments without scanning it for viruses first? User: It didn't say anything about a virus before I opened it. I thought it was safe. Fortunately, all he had to open was the Alert.txt file, not a real virus file. I agree with the sentiment that the biggest security problem is the one between the chair and the keyboard.
