I'm not sure that this is something that you are doing or omitting to do - I
encountered a similar experience with Word 2000 around 9 months ago and it was
a totally inexplicable event.

All I eventually managed to detect that it is to do with multiple section usage
and how the page/section breaks fall within that. It was especially bad with
documents where multiple operators had worked and had used different types of
breaks.

We got so frustrated with the problem that eventually we removed ALL our
headers and page/section breaks, replacing them with bookmarks within the
document to show where they should be. We then recreated the breaks using a
consistent method throughout and set up the new headers on that basis.

Depending on the size of your document, you might find this is the easiest way
to solve the problem. Sorry, but I don't have anything more techie to offer
you!

Regards

Anne

Subject: [mso] WORD XP Headers and Footers Disappear

If anyone can explain what I'm doing (not doing) that will help, you
will be blessed with the knowledge that you have saved my sanity (thou
I'm sure someone will say you're too late to save my sanity)!

  Working with Word XP

I have a multi-page document with multiple sections. Each section has
it's own header and another word document linked into it. The linked
documents are consistently being updated and I periodically re-link
these documents into mine. Every time I re-link, I lose the header on
the first page of that section. Subsequent pages do not lose their
header. I'm also losing footers but haven't paid as much attention to
the exact circumstances, but some pages have the footer and some don't.
When I open the orginal document - before updating any links - all the
headers and footers are in place. WHY
