My page numbers had been working pretty good over the last week so I thought
I was past the page number problem but yesterday the page number (1) for the
first page started showing up again. I did the steps you suggested
yesterday and I still had 1 showing up on the first page. Today, this
morning, again the 1 showed up again on another document and so not thinking
it would help I did the same routine again. This time the 1 went away from
the first page. To the bottom of that box you mentioned there is a format
box button so that the different first page will remain checked. I clicked
the button but I always clicked the "keep this format" button before but
would still have the number 1 showing up. This time the number 1 did not
show up again and so far with another paper the number 1 did not show up on
the first page. I'll see how long this lasts. Frank

Sorry for the extraordinary delay in getting back to you on this. I'm
literally 2 weeks behind on my e-mails.
On the extremely off chance that this question has not yet been answered in
the easiest way:
Click on the "Page Layout" tab. At the very bottom right of that grouping,
you'll find a very tiny square button with an arrowhead pointing to the
bottom right corner of it. Click on that and it brings up the old familiar
dialog box from which you do what you want to do: click on the 3rd tab
there, [layout], and select the check box which says "Different first page."
Then edit the First Page Footer and remove the Pg.# field, if any.
