It might be something that Word's loading.

Archive and delete the active Normal.DOT.  It might possibly be corrupt.  (I 
don't know if you can get away without one at all.  If not, there's probably 
an old copy lurking somewhere.)

Also, are you running any plug-in's?  If so, they might be worth finding and 
deleting.

Otherwise, sounds like you need to do an installation repair.
