No...it's not just you. Whoever came up with the idea of fast find should be taken out and shot! Most of the stuff I really like...either because I haven't seen anything that works as well, or because I've learned to use it (by force or otherwise<g>) well enough that I make it work well for me, even if there could be other ways if I took the time to learn. But then there are those things that just blow! And yes, when Microsoft blows it...I have no problem letting them know about it. Hell, I've been screaming about Master Docs for 8+ years! I used to use Ventura Publisher to design/publish many large financial/stats books. It was hell...but it was stable and the only time I had to spend was learning to use the program...not fighting with it. Word has never figured out to deal with resources enough to be able to put a few files together without trashing them! Which is why I've been telling folks for YEARS how to use RD codes to do it. By doing it the slightly harder way from the beginning...you end up with a much more stable book because you pull the individual files together OUTSIDE the program. This is how Ventura Publisher did it! And on the flip side, there's a lot of things folks constantly complain about, like AutoForms, fields or styles. The only reason these things seem complex is cos' the person has never taken the time to learn HOW to use them. And when the hell are they gonna remove Fast Save from Word's Options? It does NOTHING anymore but corrupt documents! Everybody...click Tools/Options/Save and make SURE you do not check Fast Save! NEVER use it! Eight years ago it was useful when we were running 8086s...but with a 486 now being an antique, why on Earth is this option still there!<sigh> Geez...see what happens when you get me started!<lol> Dian Chapman Technical Consultant, Instructor, Microsoft MVP & TechTrax Editor Word AutoForm/VBA eBook: http://www.mousetrax.com/books.html Tutorial web site: http://www.mousetrax.com/techpage.html TechTrax Ezine: http://www.mousetrax.com/techtrax/ -----Original Message----- From: mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:mso-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Renaud, Parker Sent: Friday, August 23, 2002 2:55 PM To: 'mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [mso] Re: Find Fast Dian- It is so good to hear a Word professional express my opinion of Find Fast. I thought I was just a grumpy old man. I also share your opinion of the search engine interface in Win XP Pro. It is just awful. Although I'd have to check. They TRIED to put it back as the default in XP and so many folks screamed...including me, big time...cos' forcing the damn thing to stop all the time by me cause me to trash my FAT table and blow away a hard drive! I was livid while beta testing!!!! I more than hate it, I despise it! I've never used it and never had a hard time finding what I need. And to have that thing try to run to organizing my file list for itself so it can help me find stuff faster is nuts! The time I wasted when it was forced upon me...to retrieve my mouse while a 20gig hard drive stopped sorting really ticked me off. And the fact that Microsoft wanted to FORCE it upon me as a default was all I could take!! Some folks don't mind it...but I find absolutely NO use for it other than to make Microsoft developers look better cos' the programs can search the code better. And speaking of searching...I wasn't on the WinXP beta team, but I'd LOVE to know what they did to trash the search engine in WinXP Pro! I love the system, but the search engine is now useless!<sigh> Huge drives obviously mean they need better ways to find files, faster. But they sure blew it with WinXP Pro! OK, so I like the 3-D dog...but the new interface is a PITA!
