Justin are you saying that whenever you try and attach a Word document to an
outgoing email, it shows as having the Notepad icon next to it?
If so, what happens if you open that attachment (before sending it)? Does it
open in Word or Notepad?
If Notepad, does it appear as plain text, or does it have all sorts of
formatting in it?
This may be a Windows issue rather than Office.

Every one, word does not seem to work in Outlook xp, I have it as mr editor,
but when I go look for a doc that I want to attach it is not in the word
format but a text format I guess you call it has the notebook next to it.
