To change the sort order, open Outlook 2003, select E-mail Accounts, click
option for "View or change existing directories or address books", click
Next, select Address Book you want to change, click Change button, at
bottom, click option for (Show names by) File As (Smith, John), then click
Close and Cancel.  This should make the change you want.

Maybe you could just type them in last name first since most programs
search 
that way?
