Re my recent post, I have found the answer.

Using keywords in the Office Assistant hadn't brought
anything up, but I eventually found the answer under
Help on the Menu Bar:  Contents and Index|Working with
workbooks and worksheets|Troubleshoot working with
workbooks and worksheets,and it tells you the cause is
having more than one window open and how to close the
one you don't want.

That's a relief - I thought I had two versions of the
spreadsheet and didn't know which one I had made the
most recent changes to!  I still don't know how I
managed to open a second window though.
