Can anyone tell me the reason/purpose of the smart tags? What can they
do for me?

Thanks,

Break out your Office XP CD...use the Add/Remove feature and mark all
the Smart Tags, under Office Tools, with an X for not available. Then
run the setup to uninstall those items.
