If you enter a formula into a cell (as a working formula), then format the cell as text, it will continue to function as a formula until you edit it. Then it will be displayed as text. For example, in a new worksheet enter =2+2 in a cell (4 should be displayed as the result). Format the entire column as text. Now edit the formula to =2+2+2. Cells formatted as text show exactly what you type into them, so formulas will show as formulas and not work. So, by choosing to clear all would clear the text formatting and fix your problem. I correct this by using the clear all function, which gets rid of all invisible formatting, but what causes it in the first place.
